It’s because we appreciate the challenges faced by trustees that we’ve been successful in helping over 100 clients meet theirs effectively. Our range of services has been developed to help our clients focus on the issues that matter and give real insight and understanding into how they may be addressed. Our services cover four main areas, and are supported in each case with tailored education programs so the services can offer the greatest help.

Risk management

Governance, ultimately, is about the effective control of the risks faced in running an institution. This starts with identifying the various types of risks faced, and what options exist for their management. But any risk is relative to something else – and that something must be the purpose and objectives of the institution. We can help trustees address this in a number of ways. We can educate trustees on methods that can be used to mitigate these risks and by quantifying them and helping prioritise those which are most important.

Strategy

In simple terms, the strategy is the approach taken to manage risks. It has a range of elements, from the broad investment strategy framework, to the way in which the various functions (such as investment adviser and managers) inter-relate. Typically, trustees will take advice from an investment consultant and other professionals on how to approach these issues. However, we can also help in a number of ways. For some trustees, it’s as simple as the one-page summary of investment strategy that is included in all regular reporting as a reminder of the rationale behind the strategy. For others, it can be our governance benchmarking service that looks at the variety of risks faced and benchmarks the scheme’s approach against market and best practice.

People

Inevitably, a key part of the role of a trustee is to implement the strategy by appointing, working with and monitoring the performance of others. It is in this area that much trustee time is devoted. We can help trustees in a number of ways, from ensuring the mandates are understood and defined effectively, to providing concise and clear reporting to identify when issues are emerging. For the more sophisticated clients, we provide leading edge analysis on both the performance of investment managers and advisers. This will give insight into the key drivers of returns and risks and whether these are consistent with the mandate and expectations. Our approach helps focus time spent on the issues that matter.

Communication and Engagement

Pension schemes have a number of stakeholders, all of whom are interested in how things are being run. Trustees typically use a wide range of communication tools, whether to communicate to members or to engage with the sponsor. These tools range from documentation, such as the Statement of Investment Principles and Annual Report and Accounts, all the way to tailored communication. We have significant experience in all of these areas and have developed tried and tested tools, which are both effective at communicating key messages and make producing this material considerably easier. Our consultants can work with you to ensure that communication is tailored to reflect most effectively what you want to say.
